Pitlochry to the Cairngorms

181 miles/290km

You will cover approximately 181 miles (290 kilometers) navigating around the Cairngorm mountain range, which features four peaks exceeding 1200 meters, ranking just below Ben Nevis in height across Britain. The route cleverly avoids the lack of through-roads by tracing scenic roads such as the Cock Bridge to Tomintoul stretch, which reaches an elevation of 640 meters.

Starting from Pitlochry, you follow the road toward Braemar in Royal Deeside, transitioning from fertile farmland to the stark beauty of Glenshee. The drive leads through Braemar and the picturesque village of Ballater, before entering enchanting woodland toward Cock Bridge. Here, the terrain offers a blend of sharp climbs and exhilarating descents through quality roads, including the ski area at Lecht, before reaching Tomintoul.

From Tomintoul, you have the option to explore quieter back roads cutting through Speyside, renowned for its high concentration of whisky distilleries—many welcoming visitors. These roads guide you toward Rothiemurchus and the Aviemore region, a hub for outdoor activities and an ideal spot to enjoy shopping and cafes if you choose to pause.

The journey continues on peaceful routes through Kincraig, Kingussie, and Newtonmore, home to the free Highland Folk Museum. Following this, you approach Laggan at the base of the Monadhliath Mountains. Turning left at Laggan directs you past Dalwhinnie, where you can visit its famous distillery. The route concludes by reconnecting to the A9 for a short stretch back to Pitlochry, passing Bruar and Blair Atholl.
