The central core of the Green Park Hotel in Pitlochry is a gracious country house.
This original house was built in 1889 for two sisters, Grace Louise Cowan and Jane Eleanor Cowan. They came from a family of merchants who, having been successful in both Glasgow and Edinburgh, saw good sense in escaping from the cities, moving to the clear air of Perthshire and, if fortune favoured them, becoming country gentry.
The family had a tendency to produce female offspring unable to secure husbands. Reconciling themselves to this condition, the two ladies, in their forties blossomed as social hostesses for the cream of local society at their fine country house hotel, then called Lagreach and at present times, the Green Park Hotel.
The daily routine of the hotel still follows the lifestyle of its first owners, sensitively modified to current requirements and with modern facilities.
Since 1996 the hotel has been owned and operated by the McMenemie family. Two generations of the family are actively involved - John and Mary (Mum and Dad), and Alistair and Diane (son number three, and daughter in law). John and Mary celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in October 2008, and are pictured above.
Alistair is pictured at reception, while Diane is pictured sandwiched between hotel guests, Jack and Veronica Weir. The Weirs of Northern Ireland are part of a fearless and select band of discerning travellers, who have followed the McMenemies around Pitlochry as they have progressed from Castlebeigh House Hotel, to Knockendarroch House Hotel and finally to the Green Park Hotel. We commend their remarkable fortitude to you! The four of us, together with friendly and enthusiastic staff run the hotel on traditional lines. This clearly appeals to many people, as the hotel is fortunate enough to have a considerabe number of visitors, who as regulars, come to the hotel not once but several times each year.
David and June Ann (Gallacher - pictured to the left) have worked alongside us, practically from the time that we took over the running of the Green Park. David's specialist subjects are malt whisky and Liverpool F.C., and he is available to chat about either subject at any time of the day. June Ann has taken a PHD in pulling together a rota for the hotel at a moments notice, and she also claims to be able to find Alistair where ever he may be in the hotel after everyone else has given up the hope of ever finding him again.
THE GREEN PARK HOTEL IS SCOTTISH HOTEL OF THE YEAR 2015!
Alistair and Diane are absolutely delighted to have the honour of The Green Park Hotel being awarded Scottish Hotel of the Year 2015 by The Good Hotel Guide. This photo has been especially chosen as Diane has her eyes closed!
The Good Hotel Guide is the leading independent guide to hotels in Great Britain and Ireland. It is written for the reader seeking impartial advice on finding a good place to stay. Hotels cannot buy their entry as they do in most rival guides. No money changes hands, and the editors and inspectors do not accept free hospitality on their anonymous visits to hotels.
The Green Park hotel in Pitlochry is a long established and very popular family run hotel, in Highland Perthshire.
The hotel is to be found on the western outskirts of Pitlochry, a small town of two to three thousand, which lies within the southern edge of Highland Scotland.
The Green Park hotel is one of Pitlochry's best known landmarks, enjoying unrivalled views over Loch Faskally from its lochside position; truly one of Pitlochry's best locations. Set in three acres at the 'Inverness' end of Pitlochry, the Green Park is within strolling distance of the shops and a pleasant walk from the Pitlochry Festival Theatre.
The hotel is spacious and full of light. The public rooms are well appointed and restful. The bedrooms are neat and attractive; all have private bathrooms, colour televisions, tea/coffee making facilities, hair dryer, electric blankets, and direct dial telephones.
Sixteen of the hotels bedrooms are on the ground floor level. In response to public demand, the hotel has been non-smoking since 1996. The Green Park hotel has a full hotel licence, and wines and refreshments are on call at all reasonable times. Pets are welcome by arrangement.
The Green Park hotel is run by two generations of the McMenemie family - John, Mary, Alistair and Diane - in a manner suitable to the character of the house and its setting. It functions with quiet taste and style as a friendly country house hotel, where full attention is directed to the requirements of our guests.
Good food is an essential part of any holiday, and the hotel's fare is an integral part of the style of the Green Park. We are proud of our table, where dishes and menus are prepared with the accent very much on fresh local produce.
The Green Park hotel is an ideal base for touring Perthshire and the Southern Highlands, and information can be supplied by our reception at any time of the day.
