‘STATE OF EMERGENCY’ with Max Stafford

New for 2026!

Have you ever thought that you could make a better job of running the government in a crisis ? Well good news - now is your chance !

From Monday the 9th of February until Friday the 13th of February 2026

Depending on the scenario, you and your fellow students will form COBRA or the cabinet and work to resolve a series of crises. It will become all in a days work for you to respond to a terrorist attack, deal with a constitutional crisis, negotiate in the middle of a general strike, while bailing out your flooded constituencies. Max will be on hand to explain the intricacies of government and to keep the peace as the pressure rises !

Dr. Max Stafford is a current university lecturer and former political adviser. He researches into political leadership (UK, US and Europe), at the local and national level. He's currently writing two books on the Downing Street Chief-of-Staff and teaches at the University of Southampton. In his spare time, he plays snooker (badly).

There is no supplementary charge for single accommodation on any of our activity breaks, and as normal, we can arrange free transport (on arrival and departure) between the hotel and the bus and railway stations.

Details about all of our activity breaks are readily available - either download a copy from this section, ask for them during you stay, or just telephone the hotel and ask us to forward a programme for whatever activity you are interested in.
