Glencoe and Appin

220 Miles/354 Kms

Your journey stretches approximately 220 miles (354 kilometers), starting with a westward route alongside the River Tay and continuing past the full length of Loch Tay. Early on, you will arrive at Killin, a small village known for the impressive Falls of Dochart. This marks the beginning of the western section, where the landscape gradually shifts to a more rugged and isolated atmosphere as you head toward Crianlarich.

As you pass through Tyndrum and Bridge of Orchy, both offering convenient stopping points, the scenery continues to rise in elevation and dramatic effect. The highlight comes when you reach Glencoe, where the towering peak of Buachaille Etive Mòr dominates the skyline. Driving through this glen provides a striking experience, with steep mountains flanking the road and commanding views that are characteristic of the Scottish Highlands.

Upon exiting Glencoe at Ballachulish, you’ll navigate beneath the A82 main road before turning toward the coastal stretch of Appin. Here, the scenic route includes sights like Castle Stalker, which stands isolated on a small island just offshore. Continuing along the southern shore of Loch Etive, the landscape remains dramatic with steep-sided mountains guiding your path.

Eventually, the route loops back, reconnecting with your outward journey near Tyndrum, leading you back to Pitlochry by the same route. Throughout this 220-mile drive, you will experience a mix of rivers, lochs, mountain passes, and coastal views, all showcasing varying elements of Scotland’s natural beauty.
